The commoditisation of education makes it simply a precursor for industry. It’s entirely geared around achieving a cookie-cutter output with little or no consideration at curriculum design level to creative thought, expression or exploration. We have allowed successive governments to define what educational success looks like from a data and statistical perspective rather than a human level because as a society we don’t value creativity, logical and critical thinking and difference as much as we used to, we value money and material above all else. The curriculum needs to be redefined to encourage the above and to express human value beyond economical or industrial success. I say all this as someone who spent 5 years exploring ICT with primary students and THAT was an eye opener! My 15 or so years as a school governor showed me the vapid and soulless heart of the institutional beast and how teachers by and large are fighting against it to provide as much positive daily experience as possible.
