We are getting old, we are falling apart, and our minds are clouding but the passion for life doesn’t have to be diminished by the march of time.

As we men age like a fine wine (we hope), it becomes more common to experience feelings of sadness, simmering angst, depression, regret and my particular kryptonite lethargy. Procrastination can be a persistent and unwanted fruit of all of this, and it can feel as though the fire that once burned bright within us has diminished. But the good news is that there are ways to break out of this cycle and rediscover a sense of purpose and drive.

One of the most effective ways to combat procrastination is to develop a strong sense of discipline and this is usually set by our fathers when we are young. I was trained from age 5 to ALWAYS make my bed in the morning, my son gets the same treatment — discipline is something to be pursued with vigour. Set goals for yourself and hold yourself accountable for meeting them or set goals with your friends and stay accountable. Whether it’s a daily exercise routine (I go to the gym at 0630 every weekday for at least an hour to make sure I start the day as positively as possible), a writing project (like being consistent on Medium maybe?), or a home DIY project, commit to seeing it through to completion.
